Video editing problem on computer from digital camcorder?

I have a canon fs10 digital camcorder and am trying to edit the video from the camcorder using a program on my computer but the video on the editing software comes up all scrambled and no sound at all. The software I am using is Adobe Premier Elements. It works for normal video that I already have on my compter but for some reason not for the video that was just taken from my digital camcorder. Any suggestions on what I may be doing wrong ?

canon fs10 records video with .mod extension, a little weird video format unlike avi, wmv, mp4, etc.

it seems that Adobe Premier Elements can’t read mod video files. search in google, you will find some video converters called “MOD Video Converter” is developed to handle .mod files.
