Why are there different types of memory cards for cameras?

I’m wondering why are there different types of memory cards for cameras? Also what memory cards can the Olympus Mju 1010 Digital Camera use?

Good question.

First there were SmartCards for Olympus and Compact Flash for all others.

The because of limitations, Olympus dropped the SmartCards and invented the xD cards … the still have limitations (besides the fact the only Olympus and some Fujifilm camera can use them). CF cards continued to be viable.

The Sony entered the P&S game and decided to use their own memory card … to date only Sony products can use Memory Sticks.

As P&S cameras got smaller and smaller, it became obvious that a smaller, but equally as dependable memory card needed to be invented. Enter the SD and now SDHC card for use in all the P&S cameras but Sony and Olympus. Many entry level DSLR’s have started using SD cards instead of the more robust CF cards still used by all the professional DSLR’s and bridge to professional DSLR’s

I looks as though the SD (and derivative SDHC) and CF cards will be around for a long time to come. The maximum theorectial capcity of a CF card was 137 MB … that has changed now … the new limit is going to be in the terabyte range.

CF cards are preferred by pros because we are notable for being tough on our equipment … there are documented events where CF cards have been inside a DSLR when it was too close to an explosion and the CF card still had all the images on it, including a last shot of the debris that killed it, a CF card lost in a pond, found two years later and still containing image files and in my personal experience, one of my 4 GB cards was not only washed in my washer, it went through the dryer as well. All the images were intact and after copying them to my computer and formatting, it has performed with out failure.

So what to expect. See continued research and introduction of SD and SD type memory cards. Look for CF cards that are 128 GB and can write at speeds of over 1Kx.

Now to your problem: Your camera will use xD cards only up to 2 GB. It can use micro SD cards with a special adapter,but again with a 2GB limit.
