camera housing diving
Both underwater and land cameras?

First of all, budget: $400.

I need a camera that is great in and out of water. Both scuba diving and just in a regular pool.

I would prefer not to have housing units, i just want the camera to work underwater alone.

Just an easy to use, underwater/land camera, please :]] thanks
oh, and if you have any experience with these cameras, please say so :]
andd preferably not huge, chunky cameras

I have an Olympus Stylus Tough camera that I really like. It takes great pictures underwater and topside. You can get one as cheap as $150 (used) and new they run from $300- $380.

* It’s very intuitive to use.
* It does still photos and video
* You can use it for snorkeling / down to 33feet (10m) without any housing.
* It’s super-durable. I have dropped this camera 4-5 times (even on concrete) and you’d never know it.

The Stylus Tough is more of a point and shoot (as opposed to a DSLR) but it has a few manual settings (white balance, different modes for underwater wide, underwater macro, etc).

The camera is good to 10 meters / 33 feet without a housing. I don’t think you’re going to find a digital camera that goes deeper than this without a housing – unless you get an underwater camera where the case basically is the housing, but those are gigantic and not good for taking on topside vacations.

The Olympus has a housing and it’s about $280. The other thing I like about the Olympus is that if
the housing leaks, it means you won’t fry the camera! I can’t tell you how many dive trips I’ve been on where people are devastated after an o-ring fails or their housing gets bumped one too many times in the rinse bin.

One last thing; if you’re brand new or a beginner to underwater photography, I recommend taking a class either online or in person. I wasted so much time trying to “get the hang of it” on my own. I have all these blue photos from amazing dive destinations and felt so disappointed. I’ll paste a link below to an online / in person underwater photo class.
