camera live view

how to view what my camera see on a screen?
i have a nikon d40 and i just bought a remote to use for self portraits and long exposures. i know there is a way to hook up the camera to either a laptop or a small tv or something to view live what the camera see’s. just wondering what is needed to do this.
The most inexpensive and easiest accessories for shooting self portraits is a mirror and a remote shutter release. Tethering a camera to a computer can be cumbersome, very expensive and rarely used by anyone but techies, gadget lovers and a few portrait photographers. Where you do see some form of tethering is used by some sports photographers, but using a WiFi link to their on site photo editor during games … the editor can view thumbnails of what the photographer is shooting and can copy the best of the best to their notebook computer and then ship it directly to the publisher using their FTP server
