My brother is stealing from me. What should I do?
My brother is stealing from me. This isn’t the first time. Today I noticed that my Nintendo Wii had gone. It was there in the morning and he obviously stole is and sold it when I went to work. When confronted he denys it. He has a history of theft but has never actually been convicted. This isn’t the first time either, i’ve had a Nintendo DS and Digital Camera also taken. Other family members have also had money/phones stolen. We was never brought up this way so it’s sad he feels he has to do this. I’ve had enough, he’s been told enough times it’s wrong and got away with it for far too long. What should I do about this?
You don’t give much information on your living circumstances. If you are working and adult and can afford it, move out on your own and don’t let him stay at your home. If this is your apartment or house, kick him out. If you all live with parents, bring this up in a family meeting that this is missing and you are concerned about it being the brother because of his history. Mention the other things as well.
You could call the police about things stolen, but I doubt you want him arrested. And they may not intervene in a family situation. If you report it, it is out of your hands and if they can prove it was stolen by him, then it is up to prosecutor, not you. You could go to a local pawn shop and see if they have it and indicate a description of your brother to see if you can buy it back if they have it. You could possible get a good lock, deadbolt and put on your door and lock it when you go out and have everything in your room that you own. He could break down door unless you put in an exterior door rather than interior door. I am figuring that you don’t have other family members home. Could be him or someone else and you have no real proof.
I see that getting you a deadbolt lock on the door or moving out are your options. Do tell your family about the missing items though. Tell them you have considered calling the police and will if something else turns up missing. Then still put locks on door to prevent temptation.
If you can’t put locks on door, then you need to move. If you can’t do that, then don’t buy anything of value until you can move.
