camera stores san diego

My cousin shoplifted and I’m seeking answers for what will happen to him?
Apparently, my cousin shoplifted a 40$ item in an Abercrombie in San Diego. He told me he had the money, but was caught in the spur of the moment. He walked out calmly but the alarm went off. He continued to walk out and left with no one chasing him. Police surrounded the store. He was caught on the security camera however. He is 13 years old.
Can/Will they track him down due to the camera?
What would be his punishment if he is caught?
Will this go on his college applications?
I am truly worried for him so please help.
Your question is a little confusing. First you say he walked out with no one chasing him. Then you say he was caught on camera. Then you ask if they can track him down with the video. Then you ask what his punishment is if he is caught. And finally if all this goes on a college application.
So, assuming for the moment, he was caught, arrested, and charged. . ., he is a juvenile and 13 at that. I suspect he will be banned from the store, his parents will receive a “Civil Demand” letter from the store wanting about ten times the amount of money for the items value. The court would probably put him on probation. He would then have a juvenile criminal record. If the college does background checks on students, that record will come up. Juvenile records are sealed when you reach 21.
A one time screw up is not a career ending or life changing event. If he keeps his nose clean, the record will have little consequence to him later on.
