As an aspiring filmmaker should I move to LA, NY, or Vancouver Canada?
I’m graduating with a BFA in Film and Video Production in 2013 so I have some time to weigh the pros and cons… but I really don’t know where I want to go yet. I hope to become a director, but really I love all aspects of filmmaking from writing, editing, camera work, DP, cinematography, you name it I love it.
I know that LA is pretty much the root of all filmmaking but LA’s people and climate just really don’t appeal to me (I’m more of a city girl than a laid back beach type).
New York is more commercial as far as I know and not as film based… it seems to be more of a place to go to film and not a place to stay and have a production company.
And then there is Vancouver CA, all I know about Vancouver is it’s like a “second Hollywood”
If anyone could help me out by giving me some pros and cons of the places they know it would be MUCH appreciated!
They’re all really competitive places for filmmakers, but either one would really open up opportunities.
I’d prefer to live in Venice, California, because it’s near Hollywood and I’m a beach kinda guy, plus I like the diversity. For you, I’d suggest Vancouver. I’m assuming that since you’re a filmmaker your salary isn’t very good, so a luxurious New York lifestyle is out of reach.
