digital camera filters explained

Can you explain a mysteriously ripped fin on a Betta?
My betta lives in a one-gallon tank with a filter and only a pothos plant stem with roots in it. There are no other fish, there is nothing sharp that should tear a fin and the water was changed a week ago. It doesn’t look like fin rot (only the top fin is affected) but the top fin looks like it was bisected to the spine and then half of the fin removed. So the top fin is like half as thick as it once was. I’d take a picture, but I don’t have a digital camera. Can anybody help?
If your filter is a power filter, then it might have sucked in the fin and ripped it. I’d advise you to get fungal medication even before fungus appears, because it might attack the ripped fin. Better safe than sorry.
