Best way to edit & transfer Video8 (Sony CCD-TR550E) & VHS tapes to DVD please. I have HP Media Centre PC?

I have about 40 Video8 tapes, with footage ‘here & there’ on different tapes that I need to integrate; some I’ve edited through two VCRS with slow mo, snap shots & music tracks added, but that took days to do – it’s on VHS.
My PC has Hauppauge WinTV PVR PCI II (26xxx), Muvee autoProducer 5.0 SE & Windows MovieMaker, Sonic MyDVDPlus V10.
I have experimented but want a quality end product that can play on DVD players and don’t want to have to do it all again later.
Should I:-
Edit & convert to VHS using a coaxial cable to PC
(See if I can get a VHS video editing machine?)
Edit to VHS & buy a VHS to DVD recorder (don’t really want 3 VHS players..)
Use the red & white leads from the camera or a composite cable to the analogue converter in the PC & edit in PC.
There are too many and too much editing to outsource so if I have to buy gear to help me do the job well and more easily so be it.
I’m hoping someone can tell me a good way to do this please.
