Brief Scenes

my digital camera spits out AVI files, which I can’t work on with my mac. How can I convert them?

Specifically, I’m looking for a mac application that will help me convert them into something that after effects can read. Quicktime Pro, for some reason, gives me an error when trying to export. Thanks!
