messenger bags camera

Couple flying questions?
In October I’ll be flying from Toronto Ontario to Manchester England via Thomas Cook Airlines (this is my first flight, and I’ll be doing it alone). I’ve come to discover that I will be able to bring a carry on AND a “personal item” (ie my laptop)
Main question is, I have a pretty heavy duty messenger bag I use for my laptop, and it’s slightly over the size restrictions for a carry on, will that count against me in anyway? Also, any recommendations for what I put in my proper carry on. I was thinking logical things like a book, my camera and a couple things to freshen up with (toothpaste, perfume, etc) after a 7hour flight!
I’d just hate to think I have all this figured out only to get to the airport and have to check my laptop in or something.
Thanks in advance!
Air carriers will allow passengers 1 piece of hand carry. This hand carry cannot exceed more than 22 inches in length X 9inches in width X 14 inches in height, and they must fit easily in size wise (or size check) units installed at strategic positions around the check-in area or counter…and at the gate area. After that, airlines have their own different allowances when it comes to the weight of a hand carry. It is best to check with them.
As far as your laptop is concerned, A LAPTOP IS CONSIDERED A PERSONAL ITEM AND DUE TO ITS FRAGILE MAKEUP, IT WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED AS A CHECKED BAGGAGE NOR IS IT SUPPOSED TO BE INSIDE A CHECKED BAGGAGE. But, since it is considered a personal item, it is not part of the allowance as hand carry (i.e. it is separate). Other things that are considered personal items are (1) a coat (2) a reasonable amount of reading material (3) a snack (in a disposable container–to be consumed on board (4) other personal items of “reasonable amount.”
If you don’t want any surprises at the check in desk or at the gate area, I would just advise you to adhere to the size limitations of your hand carry. As for the weight, I would call Thomas Cook just to be sure.
