photography basics aperture

Best digital slr for a newbie?
I’m thinking of picking up a digital slr for photography and I am quite new to it still (I have only used basic digital cameras before when I took pictures). I know how some of the basics work like iso, aperture, and shutter. I’m interested in doing night time shots (city scapes, people, darker urban) also I am interested in shooting pictures of people (modeling and capturing the moment type of stuff). Any recommendations on which digital slr camera I should get? also what should I be looking into when I am making my decision i.e. what technical specs should i be concerned about? My budget is definitely $2000 or below. I’d prefer cheaper as a $2000 dollar first timer’s digital slr is quite pricey.
Thank you both for the great answers! I went ahead and picked up a Nikon D40!
Spend as little on the camera itself and invest in more lenses.
The Nikon D40, if you can still find one, will give you the most bang for the buck. For shooting what you want, you may want to look at the standard 18-55 mm lens as well as a 55-200 mm (for shooting sports, action and some wildlife) and the new 35 mm f/1.8 for shooting “street photography”
