photography cameras prices

What’s a good decently priced photography camera?
I’m really interested in photography, and for Christmas I’m getting a photography camera. What’s a good beginner photography camera thats around $300 or less? Something with preferably automatic focus.
if you are just interested in taking pictures of friends and scenery, a point and shoot will be simply fine. If you want to do a bit more, you might enjoy a DSLR. I don’t think you can get what you would need in a DSLR for only $300, but if you can get a little more, you should look at the Olympus line, the E420, E510, and E520. Those can be purchased with two “kit” lenses and you might can get them in the $500 to $600 range. Of those, the E510 or the E410 would probably be the cheapest. The lense that you will be getting with the kit will suffice for most circumstances. I use my E510 for landscape and quick around the house (or any other place) snapshots. You will be able to take some portraits. If you want the highest quality portraits, you will eventually have to purchase another lens, or lenses. The same would be true for macro shots – close ups of flowers, bugs, etc. Extra lense are always expensive for every brand.
My advice is not to get other lenses until you have mastered the camera. All digital camera have too many buttons for me, I can get what I want done much quicker with a film SLR and, if necessary, I can get those developed and printed in a very short time and very inexpensively. Virtually all digital cameras are auto focus, but as you get more experience and more skill, you will find that the auto focus will possibly get into your way and you will want to focus them yourself. The DSLRS, like any of the Olympus cameras mentioned above, will allow you to do that. All DSLRS now have a anti shake mechanism available. Some have it in their lenses, making the lense far more expensive. The Olympus has it in the body of the camera and it does not affect the price of the camera.
I have not gotten my 35mm film developed by this company, but on 120 color shots (Medium Format), I had the film developed for around $5 and disk made of the pictures for three dollars more. I would think that the price for 35mm film would be similar, but prints (4×6) would be $0.20 each.
My suggestion is that you print your pictures. today, with the “convenience” of digital cameras, people are just looking at the picture on the camera and downloading them on their computers, but seldom printing them. They are losing out on a history that they might like to look at in the future, long after the hard disk has crashed.
I got my first good camea in 1967 and have been taking pictures every since then. I have prints of family shots, old Vietnam War shots, vacation spots, and travels that I took while I was a travelling salesman. I have pictures of my children shortly after they were born all the way up to where they are now (33 and 30 years old). It is just fun going through them with my wife and children. My daughter found my collection of pictures and for Christmas a couple of years back, she put them into photo books in the order that they were taken. That will not be possible unless you print.
