What is “applied photography”?
Is it just a plain and simple record of e.g. a building, statue, activity at work or play? Can it include any pictorial elements in the picture or should it exclude this? It seems to me that some of the photos I’ve seen on photographic society websites, that have been entered for competitions in the “Applied” category, have elements of pictorialism in them and vice versa. Is this because the distinction between the two is becoming more blurred, as time goes by? The dictionary is no help, neither is typing “applied photography” into Google as far as I can tell.
‘Applied photography’ is a category used by the Royal Photographic Society in its distinctions procedure. It is one of the categories under which you can apply for a Licentiateship, Associateship or Fellowship of the RPS. Although you would probably get a more comprehensive definition by emailing the RPS, their Distinctions Booklet states that Applied Photography includes: ‘architectural, illustrative, documentary, potraiture, theatrical, wedding, and professional journalism; in other words, those areas of photography that pro photographers most commonly practice in. There will be an element of pictorialism in some of these areas, because photography is a visual art when all is said and done, even when applied commercially. There is a good deal of blurring in the boundaries between Applied and Pictorial, I imagine, but if you were to submit the same (say) landscape photograph in both Applied and Pictorial, it would be judged under somewhat different criteria; the Pictorial entirely as to its compositional and pure art merits, the Applied tending more to be judged as to whether it had a commercial application, such as say being used for a postcard or brochure, although of course a badly composed or technically flawed picture wouldn’t make it in either category. Some of this is supposition and guesswork based on my own experience, but to get the full story you would be best advised to attend a Distinctions Workshop and ask the panel members about the differences between categories.
