Photography Studio Lighting Equipments.?

I have been doing outdoor location photography for 4 years now, and I want to create a small studio. I am trying to figure out what lighting system to purchase. I am not very familiar with lighting systems.
I know there are 2 different lighting.
Continuous lighting and Flash lighting? Right?

There are
Softbox
Umbrella light
Mono-light
Anything else?

What are the basic light I should buy for a simple portrait studio?

Technically there are many more options than just flash or continuous, but since they all fall into one of those two categories, it will do for now.

Continuous lighting (in general) is cheaper than flash, easier to use, and best for either video or product shots. Flash, in general, is more expensive, more difficult to use, and better with subject that may move.

There are many variables in the decision over what lighting to use. Several key factors are size of your space, color of your space, and your budget. What you shoot, or intend to shoot, is also a factor. Power requirements for all those lights must be taken into consideration, along with heat that may be generated by those lights. They aren’t called “hot lights” just for fun. Power outlets, sync cables, posing/modeling stands or seats or tables, windows, lightstands or ceiling mount or wall mount, all this fun stuff…

The only real advice I can give you is to get the best equipment your budget will allow. Going cheap will only make you mad when you have to buy more stuff later to replace the cheap stuff that already broke.
