Iso during long exposure?

okay…well ive read the previous subjects on iso and how you should use a higher iso number for night time photography

I guess we really need to know what type of photo you are trying to make. Long exposures allow the film to collect and record enough light to create a “proper” exposure. However, if the subject moves during the exposure it will blur (or in some cases not even be recorded at all). So you have to have a balance between shutter speed and aperture. If you want things to blur ( like the tail lights of a car going down a freeway) you want to use a long exposure (10 sec.) and a f/stop of say around f/4.0. In this situation the tail lights are providing a pretty bright source of light to shoot. If you are shooting astrophotography then this aperture/shutter speed combo would yield little in the way of a photo.

The reason you would use low ISO film for long exposures is due to the lower noise or grain found in slower digital or film mediums. When you switch to higher ISO you are trying to stop movement by being able to use higher shutter speeds. Does that make sense?
