Photoshop or Aperture 3 for Mac?

I have a MacBook pro, and I am an amateur photographer… I shoot mainly as a hobby, though I do have a website and I do sell some prints. I shoot with a Canon EOS 50D. I primarily shoot sport (Surfing, kiteboarding, wake boarding and snowboarding) I do shoot a bit of landscape, and some funtion/party photography. I do NOT do portraits. I am fairly new to the whole editing concept, I have played around with filters and layers and things like that, but I have never gotten to in depth with editing. I am wondering what the best program would be for me to get, I want something easy to use/learn, but also I want fairly powerful editing tools. Any help appreciated, thanks!

You have a contradiction in your question, you can’t have something with ‘powerful editing tools’ and have it ‘easy to learn’. Learning post processing is actually more complicated than learning Photography and takes much longer.

I don’t like Aperture as you have to work the way it dictates (which is not the way I work). All I want is a browser program to open my picture/video files, all carefully named when uploading, and just show me the contents, I don’t want to make a ‘project’ or create an ‘Album’ just look at what I’ve got and make my selection.

This ‘simple’ way I work is catered for in Bridge (a program with hidden depths, by the way) within Photoshop, or even in the Organiser within Elements. To get a lot of the even basics in post processing you need Layers which Aperture doesn’t have, without Layers every adjustment is ‘Global’ over the whole image and it’s not as easy to ‘dump’ mistakes and go back.

Another thing I hate about Aperture (and iPhoto) is how it takes over your system, it disables the Organiser in Elements to avoid conflicts in the database, because you must surely want to use Aperture – don’t you? If you don’t – well tough. And don’t even think of getting involved with colour management – it knows best, trying to use a carefully crafted printer profile is a nightmare it keeps reverting to the ‘tested’ profile you used last time. You’ll find copies of your most opened images in Albums that it thinks you want, it’s trying to second guess you all the time.

As you can see I don’t like Aperture, it’s trying to be Lightroom, but it’s not. I uninstalled mine and several of our club members have done the same, it took me 2 days to remove all the ‘tendrils’ it had left behind and I still probably haven’t got them all.

Even lowly, cheap Elements is an easier program to use, it has a simple organiser, and has Layers and is cheaper. Photoshop it’s not and if you can afford it that’s the way to go, but for the average Photographer it’s all you need.
