photography major requirements
How would I approach my friend? Please help!?

I am a third year college student and I am taking up Visual Communications. One of our major subjects is Photography.
Now here’s the situation: one of my friends is borrowing my DSLR during our photo op. It is a must and at the same time a requirement to have your own DSLR camera. The worst scenario is, he might score higher grades than mine (in my own expense), which is kind of frustrating and dissapointing at the same time. How would I approach my friend to stop borrowing my camera and/or provide for himself one? How would I tell him this thing without having hard feelings to each other? Thanks.

First off, if he is a better (or worse) photographer than you it won’t be because he is using your camera it will be because of the skills he has – or hasn’t – acquired. It is more important to focus on your own progress rather than compare it to others because there will always be those who are better or worse.
Having recognised that would you still be happy to share your camera? As you said the course requires each student have their own DSLR and you value yours as an important resource. Do you feel he doesn’t take this seriously? Are you worried he won’t treat your equipment with respect? If you are not happy to lend it you must be honest and say so even if you find it difficult to say so – otherwise you will be angry and resentful if things go wrong and that won’t be good. You don’t have to say this in a hurtful way, just point out that you would rather not in case anything went wrong. If he seems persistent just keep explaining your reason and stick to it. Smile while you’re saying it and keep your voice low and friendly.
I assume he can’t afford to buy a camera – they aren’t always cheap. If so is there a fund to help him? Perhaps you could ask your tutor on his behalf – or suggest he does so himself. Perhaps there are other students who are upgrading their equipment and selling things for a reduced price. It never hurts to ask.
Any way good luck – and hope you have good results in this situation and your course too!
