What kind of professional photography can I do on a very low budget and with a single D-SLR body and lens?

I’m in the market to purchase an entry-level DSLR lens (for budget reasons) and wanted to consult the community for some answers. I’m planning on buying a Nikon D40 with kit lens.

Don’t get me wrong the nikon D40 is an excellent camera but i would prefer something with more megapixels. For an extra 50 bucks you can get a Canon XS which will have 10 megapixels opposed to 6. Any photographer will say its the camera and the lens that produces quality and not the megapixels which is true but the megapixels allow you to print your photos at larger sizes. More megapixels also makes the crop job easier.
