Solo female traveling around USA for six weeks – where should I go?

I’ll be starting off in San Diego and the plan is to fly over to New York and slowly make my way back to San Diego.

I really want to visit the following places:

New York
Boston
Pittsburgh (Andy Warhol museum)
Tennesse (Dollyworld)
Washington DC

I will either be using Amtrak, bus or hiring a car if I have to. I don’t really want to fly.

My main passion is photography so if anyone could suggest a great place and I like unusual places too.

Thank you all for sensible answers.

=)
I also forgot to mention that I’m an art major so DC for me will be interesting to visit all the art galleries. I forgot to add Chicago to my list!

I have already visited San Fran and would love to go back.

In the Northeast use the Chinatown bus to get from Chinatown to Chinatown (NYC-DC-Philadelphia-Boston). http://www.chinatown-bus.org/

Thumbs up to Dollywood/Eastern Tennessee.

You can very easily take Greyhound (or rent a car) from Dollywood to Asheville or Chattanooga to Atlanta to Savannah. http://www.greyhound.com/home/Default.aspx

Add Savannah, GA to your list. Stay as close to the river (Bay St/River St) as possible. (I recommend the Days Inn.) If you like photographing architecture, people, cemeteries, or landscapes you’ll love Savannah. It has the old south charm, great food, & a rich history. You can walk around old Savannah no problem (driving/parking is an issue), avoid New Savannah (sprawling suburbia). There are river boat, ghost, movie, & food tours for $15-$$$. Check out the Savannah College of Art & Design http://scad.edu/ museums while you’re there.
