photography terms composition

What exactly is composition?
I was looking up the elements of photography when I came across an article about composition. It was a bit unclear about what composition really is, and as I continued to look for an answer, I couldn’t seem to find a clear definition.
I’d just like to know what composition really is in a simple, to-the-point answer. I understand it’s not the easiest thing to describe but if someone could try to make some sense of the term for me, that’d be great.
What makes good composition then? This is probably a stupid question but I’m just a beginner, so forgive me.
Thanks again for any answers.
It’s basically where things are in a picture.
There are a few composition rules, but you don’t necessarily have to follow them to have good composition. For example, one rule is the rule of thirds. If you divide a photo into thirds (both horizontally and vertically), the focus point should fall on an intersection of lines. You can google image “rule of thirds” and see an example.
Another “rule” is to give your subject room to look into. Like, if they’re looking to the left, put them closer to the right and vice versa.
Another rule is that you shouldn’t have random things sticking out of a person’s head. Like, if there’s a pole way off into the background and it’s directly behind the person’s head, in the picture it’ll look like there’s a random pole sticking out of their head.
Also, don’t chop off limbs. Meaning, it’s not good if the person’s hand or top of their head is cut off at the edge of the picture, although most people don’t really notice unless they’re experienced photographers.
