What is the quality level of a non digital picture? At how many MP does a digital picture have more detail?

I am about to undertake the challenge of digitizing my family’s old photos and consequently and looking for some answers. photos get grainy as they are enlarged which leads me to believe that there is a quality max on a old photo and negatives that if exceeded when scanned results in no additional detail.

At what DPI is all the detail that is in a photo captured by a scanner?

Curiosity then spawned this subsequents question at how many MP is the detail captured on a digital camera better then the detail of a standard camera?

clearly this is dependent on the quality of the film and equipment used so for simplicity sake assume all the pictures were taken with a high end personal consumer camera with high end consumer film. i.e. the best of what a normal person would use.

Additionally the level of quality a professional would use for wedding photos or other such family photos.

in a nutshell and the most important question: at what dpi will a scanner get ALL the detail?

film grain maxes out at around 3200 dpi for most scanners.

this means that you wont get much more than a 16×20 out of a 35mm neg. If you have larger pieces of film, then they will be able to get bigger than that. Some scanners scan at a whopping 12800 dpi, but those cost thousands and you have to go to someone that already has this “drum scanner.”

have fun….
