How important is a cleaning sensor unit in a SLR camera?
I’m looking into getting a Nikon SLR, but it doesn’t have the self-cleaning sensor unit that some of the Canon Rebel series does. How big of a deal is it?? Can you get the lens professionally cleaned if it gets dust inside? Thanks for any input!
The vast majority of professional photographers use DSLR cameras without sensor cleaning builtin.
Is it a problem? Well, when I first started shooting with my D70 several years ago, and with my D50, I had some dust problems the first month. I cleaned my camera myself with some careful use of a blower.
Since then, with some good practices and common sense when changing lenses, I’ve has zero dust problems.
My latest upgrade was a D200, a great professional level camera.
Does it have dust removal? No.
Do I miss it? No.
Can dust be removed professionally? Absolutely – yes.
Can a typical photographer do it him/herself? Also, yes.
If you really want a Nikon DSLR with a self-cleaning sensor, look at a D60,D300, D700, or wait for the D80′s successor, due this fall.
