Can police operate speed cameras anywhere they want to?

Can they just use their laser speed guns anywhere or is it only at certain sites. My local force has published their safety camera scheme sites on their website. This basically states all the locations were police will try to detect speeding offences. However last night police were operating a speed gun on a site that is not listed on their website as a safety camera location. Can they use their cameras anywhere

The road traffic police can use the speed gun`s when ever & where ever they want with out prior notice !
The site`s you mention are not monitored by the police but by a local council speed enforcement officer and the do not need to advertise that they are going to be there on a certain day / time as long as there is speed restriction sign`s in place then they can just turn up !
Please do not listen to this nonesence about ” has the gun been calibrated ) of course the gun has been calibrated it is a requirement for them to do so ,and there has only ever been one case in the last 10 year`s where it wasn`t calibrated and the offender got off on that technicallity , They are now calibrated like clockwork it will only cause you grief off the police if he / she think`s your being clever ! there is a good chance that with an officer you can explain the reason behind you speeding and most time`s they will give you a telling off .
You can`t do that with a speed camera / enforcement officer !
