What Digital Camera to Buy?

Hi! im planning to buy my own digital camera this month but im really confused.. my first choice was to buy an olympus underwater camera bec i really love the scenes down there. but then my friend told me that olympus cameras are so over and unreliable.. can you guys suggest anything? how about a sony or canon cam? and what model? thanks in advance! happy 2009!

I’ve been using Olympus cameras for a while, and I’ve yet to see any reliability problems.. I think I’ve taken in excess of 5000 images in the 13 or 14 months I’ve had the camera and the only time its let me down is when I’d forgotten to recharge the batteries (bought a spare one), or when I was to pigheaded to read the manual.

I wish I’d bought an mju camera in palace of the fuji as a P&S but that’s another story.

if you want to take photos underwater the Olympus is a good choice.. however a better choice may be a dSLR and an underwater case.. the Olympus E4xx springs to mind.

I think there can be problems with the water seal on the MJU camera.. if the seals are not treated with care there is a risk that they can become comprised and the camera may be a wreck.

I’m not aware of any other P&S camera maker that produces anything comparable to the MJU range. you do pay for the quality of the optics so the photos won’t be as good as similarly priced canon, Nikon, Fuji, whatever… but equally you won’t get the same degree of shockproofing & splashproofing either.
