Traveling to USA – Purchasing electronics goods?
Hi,
My friend is traveling to USA for a business visit through his company. He will carry his work laptop with him. He is planning to buy a camera for him from US which costs around Rs. 20,000. If i ask him to purchase one more camera with the same price for me, will he be able to carry it back to India without paying customs fee?
I heard a person can carry maximum of Rs. 25,000 worth goods with him. Is that true?
If that is the case, is there any work around?
If at all he need to pay customs duty, how much it will be?
He is thinking about purchasing a laptop for his personal use which may cost around Rs.30,000. Is it possible to carry it also as other laptop is his work laptop?

It depends on how long he is gone for. I don’t really know anything about Indian customs so you will have to visit the respective website for that.
If he goes over the limit he’ll have to pay duty on it – up to the discretion of the officer on duty usually.
