Firewire port (winXP) does not automatically recognize Sony Digital Video Camera?

I used to be able to connect my Sony Camcorder to my PC using firewire which my PC automatically detected. I can no longer do this. At first I thought it was a cable (replaced), then my PC. I tried on other PC’s and still no detection. Is this something with SP2 (windows XP professional)
USB transfer works okay, but firewire is best. Camera is HC20. Is there any menu option needed to enable firewire download. The firewire on the PC says it is working as normal.

Some cameras require that you put them into ‘transfer mode’ in order to pull data from them. Does your camera have a transfer mode that you have to turn on before the computer can recognize it?
