Question about location of Dances With Wolves?

What was the supposed location of Fort Sedgewick? Also, what was the actual location of the panoramic scene shot where Timmons and his mule wagon and Lt. Dunbar are seen are seen traveling a low gorge type location with the camera angle from above?

The movie operates with some ambiguities around the exact location and territory in which Dunbar encounters the Lakota Sioux. It has to be in the Great Plains of course, and the historic Fort Sedgewick was actually located in Eastern Colorado.

Most of the film was shot in South Dakota, and a good portion was in the Badlands National Park.
